£161.6 million -- The biggest lottery prize so far awarded in UK history happened on July 12, 2011 when Colin Weir and wife Christine, of Largs, Ayrshire, cashed-in on a £161 million EuroMillions jackpot. Since then, the Weirs have spent lavishly (who wouldn’t?) and have also set up their own charitable trust to support Scottish communities in Scotland.
No matter where you live in the UK, you enjoy the same opportunities to win as the Weir family, so long as you don’t forget to purchase your tickets!
£148.6 million -- The 2nd largest lottery jackpot won in the UK occurred on August 10, 2012 and Adrian and Gillian Bayford from Haverhill, in Suffolk, were awarded the stupendous Euromillions prize.
Gillian, who had been working as a children’s nurse at the time of the win, and record-seller Adrian, planned to spend their riches travelling to DisneyWorld, Florida and to tour the Canadian Rocky Mountains by train. The couple separated in 2013.
(Note: Although this ticket originally represented a higher prize value than the prize won by Colin and Christine Weir, due to the euro/pound sterling exchange rates in effect at the time, Adrian and Gillian Bayford’s prize represented the 2nd largest win in UK history)
£113 million -- The UK's 3rd largest lottery prize was claimed by a Briton who won the Euromillions jackpot on October 8, 2010. Unlike many ticket-holders who publicly announce their major lottery winnings, this winner decided to remain anonymous.
£107.9 million -- Neil Trotter, car mechanic and racing car driver from south London, picked up a cool £107.9 million EuroMillions jackpot on March 14, 2014 with partner Nicky Ottaway.
Neil told reporters that he had purchased £10 worth of EuroMillions Lucky Dips and said that he felt positive about winning.
At the time of winning the 4th largest lotto in UK history, he was the owner of an auto repair garage in Mitcham, called Chameleon Coachworks.
£101 million -- Dave and Angela Dawes had only played the lottery twice when they won £101 million EuroMillions draw in 2011, but the couple were blessed with impeccable timing as they watched their numbers announced on the live TV draw!
At the time of the win, the couple were sharing a £70 per week one-bedroom flat and hadn’t been able to get married due to financial constraints. ‘Picking the right numbers and then watching them come up on live TV is the best way to win,’ said Dave.
It remains Britain’s 5th largest lottery win.
£93.3 million -- The winning ticket was drawn June 12, 2015 but the winners didn't want the announcement to be made public. It’s the 6th largest prize in UK history.
£84.4 million -- The 7th largest lotto prize winner in Britain’s history opted to keep their identity secret. The ticket was drawn in May, 2010.
£81.3 million – One anonymous ticket holder won this amount in May, 2013 and is the 8th largest prize in UK history.
£73.2 million -- The winning ticket was drawn on May 2, 2014 making it the 9th largest lotto prize ever awarded in Britain.
£61.1 million -- The Davies family from Monmouth, Wales, picked up a cool £61.1 million when their numbers were drawn on July 29, 2016. Theirs is the 10th largest win in UK history, and the largest in the history of Wales, ever!
Sonia Davies and partner Keith Reynolds were in the United States when they found out by email they had won. They were there to see Keith’s daughter graduate, and for Sonia to have surgery.
Sonia said, “What a roller coaster of a week we had! I had my operation on Wednesday and until then, we didn’t know how serious it was. They told me that if it hadn’t been removed it would have been fatal – and at the very least I would have lost my voice within a year. They managed to give me the all clear straight after the operation, so as you would imagine, we were on cloud nine."
Sonia and Keith live near Ross on Wye. The other winners named in the prize syndicate are: Courtney Davies, sister Stephanie Davies and her boyfriend Steve Powell. The family from Monmouth will share £12 million each.
