The winner of a $560 million jackpot in a Powerball draw earlier this year is now fighting the US legal system in a bid to stay anonymous.
The woman who won the jackpot and lives in New Hampshire filed a civil complaint after declaring that signing her winning ticket before consulting a lawyer was "a huge mistake." The state of New Hampshire law states that all winners must go public with their winnings, however they are able to establish a trust with which they can also claim their prize.
She only learned of the option to create a trust to claim her winnings after signing her winning ticket.
She is currently in court in a bid to stay anonymous, stating that she wants, "the freedom to walk into a grocery store or attend public events without being known or targeted as the winner of a half-billion dollars".
Her lawyers are arguing that her right to privacy outweighs the public interest in disclosing her identity. But because she has already signed the ticket she could be forced to reveal her identity as the law states any alterations to the signature on the ticket would mean that she forfeits the prize.
