The win is the biggest ever recorded lotto win for the area, right behind a $7 million win that happened back in January 2016. The win was made up from $7 million from the Powerball First Division, and $250,000 from the Lotto First Division after a $1 million win was split four ways.

A spokesperson for the family syndicate told local news that the winners have been playing lotto since it first came to New Zealand. According to the spokesperson the winner could not believe their luck; "I didn't want to finish checking the ticket, I was way too nervous," said the winner.
