The lucky player claimed a whopping $202 million from a Mega Millions draw that took place on February 11th of this year. They came forward with their winning ticket earlier in the week.
A law was passed in the state of New Jersey at the beginning of the year which allows players to stay anonymous. It is one of the few American states that allow lottery winners to stay anonymous.
The player said that they heard about the winning news the day after they bought the ticket. The store who sold the winning ticket also received a $30,000 bonus commission check.
The winner first got wind of the news on a Facebook post the day after the draw and checked their ticket to see they had won.
“The winner, completely shocked, managed to compose themselves enough to get back to work while they gathered their thoughts and made a plan,” a Mega Millions spokesperson said in the statement.
After realizing they had won they immediately contacted a lawyer who advised them to remain anonymous. The $202 million prize is the 13th largest lottery prize ever claimed in New Jersey.
