The record-breaking Powerball jackpot had been growing since a June 10th drawing, and was finally won by a lucky player from Massachusetts. The jackpot was the second biggest ever for the US Powerball, behind the $1.6 billion jackpot that was won in January 2016 and was shared between three winners.
Mother-of-two Mavis Wanczyk from Massachusetts bought the $700 million winning ticket from her local petrol station just before Wednesday night's winning draw. She told local reporters that she picked her winning numbers using the birthdays of friends and relatives, and that she planned on spending her winnings on her home and family after she quit her medical assistant job.
The jackpot can either be claimed as monthly payments or as a lump sum, is estimated to to be around $443 million after taxes. Six other tickets from across the US won $2 million in the same Powerball draw, while thirty four tickets lucky ticket holders each won $1 million.
